I didn't find much insight into Mexican-American culture here. Mediocre writing.

A realistic voice, but Gabi got on my nerves more than anything else.

Well, clearly I like this one, since I gave it 4.5 stars. This is a teen title for older teens and adults. Gabi has a lot on her plate--college applications, a troubled homelife, a pesky younger brother, dating, as well as just trying to accept herself and grab hold of her power and independence. Gabi's voice is strong and funny, so very easy to empathize with her and root for her.

Gabi is very real and she knows her own mind. She deals with a lot of issues—a drug addict father that she loves anyway, her own quest for love and sex, and getting ready to be the first in her family to attend college.

Hilarious -preface says it all: "for all the gorditas, flaquitas, and in-between girls trying to make their space in the world."

The themes and Gabi's blistering honesty will resonate with teen girls everywhere; ultimately, I like to think of this as the "Catcher in the Rye" for young Latinas. Bold and game-changing!

Really enjoyed this novel, refreshing insight into the mind of a young out spoken girl, who things that she is flawed because she does not fit the stereo type of what a young good girl should look like, or should do to prove that she is a good girl. Even though she is Mexican, she is every young girl because most of her angst is the same for most teenaged girl

this book was wonderful sad at times but all so laugh out loud funny.

Wonderfully honest with a narrative voice that is touchingly genuine and a protagonist who is refreshingly flawed. For such a small book it covers a wide range of harsh and difficult topics, from drug addiction to teen pregnancy from bigotry to cultural identity and all in a straightforward manner. Despite all of this the plot never becomes bogged down and the tone remains hopeful. An excellent choice for teens looking for realistic, slice-of-life fiction.

"Maybe this was the reason I hadn't lost weight. God had a plan for me all along! And that plan was to overpower one of the hottest guys in school and slap the s**t out of him raping my best friend..."(261)
