This is more than a version of Clan of the Cave Bear. It has carefully constructed environmental reconstructions, and wanderings across what we now call "France" up to the ice sheets (North Sea). We follow Loon through a regular life and one with determination to make the best of his life for the people around him. It is a very human story, including a plausible role for the Neanderthal companions.

Shaman is a take-off on Auel's "Clan of the Cave Bear". The author describes a multitude of tools and techniques that the stone-age people used to survive. Unfortunately for me, character development was superficial and the story line seemed very predictable. I gave up my quest for interesting developments half way through. Perhaps the latter half is more interesting, but I didn't go there.

A Cro-Magnon bildungsroman. Our hero, Loon, is a reluctant and irreverent Shaman-in-training. During his "Wander," an adulthood initiation trial of skill and survival, Loon gets a taste for solitary freedom away from the social confines of his small pack and his shaman role.

Describes some of the very few people who ever entered Chauvet cave, and the art is described well enough that you know what picture they're talking about.
The first artists in Chauvet cave came in, drew some pictures, and then about 2,000 years later some others came in and drew somemore. This story is about those later artists. It's hard to understand after this much time but as much time exists between the first artists of Chauvet cave and these folks in the story as exists between us and Julius Caesar.

Just had the good fortune to finish reading an advance copy - this is a fantastic story of coming of age, love, high adventure, survival, art and spirit. As usual for Kim Stanley Robinson, his characters ring true, their relationships painfully, sadly, hilariously accurate. You won't put it down.

I am the third wind
I come to you
When you have nothing left
When you can't go on
But you go on anyway
In that moment of extremity
The third wind appears
And so it is I come to you now
To tell you this story
