I rank this film starring Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, William Bendix and Howard Da Silva in the top 10 or 15 of all the film noirs. Going in, I knew that Raymond Chandler, one of the top crime novelists of all time, was the script writer, but I did not know that he wrote the whole thing just for this film. I should have figured as the bodies start piling up, just as in his book The Big Sleep (also made as a film with Humphrey Bogart). The actual original killer was the second last accused, but the government convinced the producers to change it to be the last accused. This film was released in 1946, when Hollywood only had African-Americans play buffoons or servile characters. See if you can spot the two scenes where African-Americans are in these type roles for about 20 seconds. Howard Da Silva was soon put on the blacklist by the political right wing so he was then limited to working in New York (live theatre) until the blacklist was ended a decade later.

I have been waiting to see this notorious film noir for years. My library finally obtained a copy, and I was ecstatically awaiting my turn in line.

I think perhaps that in all my anticipation of finally watching this elusive "white elephant", I expected too much of it. It was good... William Bendix and his "crazy monkey music" was funny. Lake and Ladd were excellent together. The ending left something to be desired. I haven't seen the above twosome in "The Glass Key", but I still find their pairing in "This Gun For Hire" my favorite of their films together to date.
