Baxter and Pratchett weave three new threads into a wonderful tapestry, encompassing the first three novels of this series, and leaving me in suspense and eager anticipation of the final culmination of one of the best alternate/multiverse series I have ever read!

This is an excellent series due to the collabaration of two excellent F & SF authors.

Fantasy readers will complain, of course, because they live in a different world, and will be confused by the attention to scientific detail.

I have already put the final novel of this series, "The Long Utopia", on hold!

Third book in the series and as said by someone else it doesn't stand on its own. A lot going on and sub-leads from the previous books are continued.

While there is no sequel announced I don't think all the lose ends have been properly wrapped so there may be a big finish later on.

This, the third book in the ongoing series, expands on the future of humanity. It's now the mid-21st century, a couple dozen years after Humanity discovers a means to travel to parallel Earths. All are empty of intelligent life, so humans spread and settle onto thousands of worlds with plenty of space and plenty of resources. Nations spread their influence over their equivalent lands. But some worlds are dead, barren of life. If that's true, is there a Mars that does host life?

3rd book of the The Long ... series. Don't think it is a stand alone book- need to have read the first two, in order to understand what/who is going on.
Continues the interesting premise of traveling in parallel worlds, Earth, and then Mars.
Not a lot of plot, but some character development in previously met "protagonists". Joshua, Sally, Lobsang, Commander Maggie...
Sets the stage for another book yet.
