Since the spring of 2036, when the world changed forever, Claudia and a small clan of survivors have roamed the streets of a very altered Nashville--polluted and desolate, except for the ever-present threat of cannibals. Together they must undergo punishing tests of endurance and psychological challenge--sometimes with devasting consequences--all just to live another day. With food and water in dwindling supply, and with danger lurking around every corner, no one can be trusted. And as her world starts to make less and less sense, Claudia begins to realize something terrifying: she is just a pawn in some sort of game, and all her actions are being controlled from afar by a mysterious gamer. So when she meets a maddening and fascinating outsider named Declan, who claims to be a game moderator, she must decide whether to join him in exchange for protection and access to the border. If they play the game right, they are each other's best hope for survival--and a life beyond the only world Claudia's ever known: the terrifying live-action game known as The Aftermath.

“The Aftermath” delves into a sunlit world with a sordid underbelly. It’s a modern dystopia about another one of government’s desperate attempts to deal with an inescapable facet of human nature: the urge towards violence. How this fictional society combats this particular problem is laid out through passages that thrill and chill the reader. We are assailed by harrowing passages of wanton death, bloodshed and violent crime that is sometimes juxtaposed by moments of surprising sweetness.

This novel constantly shocks and surprises with its revelations, its teasing hints at a bigger picture and its protagonist’s need to retain her humanity and save her friends. Ms. Alexander’s anti-heroine isn’t conventionally pretty, kind or trusting. She’s a damsel in distress but she’s also gutsy, tough and cunning. She’s a sword forged in the flames of hell and dancing on a keen razor’s edge between danger and safety. Ms. Alexander has us rooting for Claudia Virtue and hoping that she not only survives her ordeal but gets a happy ending—or least as happy as anyone can get who is up against a monolithic corporation.

The abrupt revelation at the end of this first installment in this series jolts the reader but no more so than anything that has preceded it. Ms. Alexander knows the difference between shock for the sake of a cheap thrill and disclosures that serve the purpose of the storyline and the ending definitely falls into the latter category. Intrigued? Then step into The Aftermath, if you dare.
