"Elizabeth Barnabus lives a double life--as herself and as her brother, a private detective. She is trying to solve the mystery of a disappearing aristocrat and a hoard of arcane machines. In her way stand the rogues, freaks and self-proclaimed alchemists of a travelling circus. But when she comes up against an agent of the all-powerful Patent Office, her life and the course of history will begin to change. And not necessarily for the better...."--from cover, p. [4].

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Elizabeth Barnabus is a gutsy young girl willing to go the extra mile to find out the truth, with help in unexpected people who care about her. I was hoping that she developed a relation with John Farthing.

This is a steampunk mystery novel about cross dressing. If that doesn't just scream "Awesome" to you, then I can't really do much for you. It requires a sizeable suspension of disbelief in order to buy the premise of a sort of Victorian social stagnation lasting to the present day, but a very entertaining and engaging chase awaits those who can look beneath the surface. Highly recommended.
