After the death of her father, the acerbic March Middleton becomes the ward of the even more acerbic Sidney Grice.

Sidney Grice is not Sherlock Holmes, although at first inspection there are several similarities between the detectives.

This book is immensely humanized by the main female (non-romantic) character. Without her this would be a dull story.
