Haunting final episode to one of the most unusual dramas in TV history. Felt like I'd lost a friend when it ended.
Michael C. Hall gets 5-stars. He deserved an Emmy for his performance as “Dexter”.
What a complete disappointment.
Banal. Prosaic. Predictable. Clichéd. Limited. These are words that can describe the worst of what Dexter has to offer. And here’s a sentence that characterizes the show at its best—‘Dexter encapsulates the depths and heights of tragedy on an exceedingly sublime level.’ Or at least that was the case in earlier seasons with Trinity et al.
Dexter is one of several shows (including Revenge, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mad Men, etc.) that has a protagonist that is ISTj (The Structurist, The Pragmatist, The Inspector, The Dragoon). While it’s not better than Buffy, it is a bit better than Revenge at times. Nevertheless, this season is a bit of a cop out, even if it’s not the worst season ever. Even when it gets pretty mediocre, Dexter does a decent job of allegorizing (American, etc.) moral cowardice, dualism, Manicheanism, spiritual myopia, one-sidedness, etc. and the idea that punishment, revenge, murder, violence etc. are the only (permanent) ways to deal with things, and there is no point in trying to improve and heal ourselves and others (by improving child-rearing, etc.) If this show is trying to tell us anything, it’s how scary and dangerous complacency, apathy, detachment, alienation, emotional blindness, repression, denial, etc. can really be.
P.S. Dexter should probably win an award for one of the most depressing endings for a TV series. Proof enough that, at heart, this show was about ‘dark side’ people.
The show was going downhill, it's still pretty good, and I think -- just right at the very very end -- that might have been the best ending I ever saw, although I can see how you'd hate it. I'm thrilled that they didn't take an easy way out.
While the final season was exciting and up to the usual standards of the show, the final episode itself left many loose ends, and much to be desired.
I was hoping that they would depart from their formula for the last season but no such luck. I'm glad this series is over even as much as I enjoyed earlier seasons. The soap opera styling was just too much.
Very good crime drama series with a very unique protagonist (serial killer as the "good guy"). Great must watch series overall, but this last season ends with a pop instead of a bang. The weakest season in my opinion, but still a compelling show. Great writing and acting. Graphic. The entire series is worth watching if you don't mind the graphic nature of the show.
I gave this 5 stars for the entire series which truly is outstanding. This show should have had it's year of sweeping the Emmy's a la Mad Men or Breaking Bad but that never happened and judging by the conclusion, it's not going to happen for this final season either. This is very good about a little more than halfway through and for the fans of this show, the storyline became very predictable as it neared it's ending. I was hoping it had gone down differently so perhaps there'd be a movie in the future but, I'm not sure. A show still head and shoulders better than most that is out there.
