Elder McLeod--outspoken, surly, a brash American--is nearing the end of his mission in Brazil when he is given a new partner -- Elder Passos, a devout, ambitious Brazilian who found salvation and solace in the church after his mother's early death. The two men are at first suspicious of each other, and their work together is frustrating, fruitless. That changes when a beautiful woman and her husband offer the missionaries a chance to be heard.

After hearing about the book on NPR, I decided to read it for myself. It is beautifully written, and I just found it interesting to read about something (international Mormom missions) that I don't know anything about - even if it is fiction. Themes include cultural differences, coming of age, struggle with religion and sexuality. A quick read, I couldn't put it down!

I've actually come to know, slightly, a couple LDS missionaries. I spotted them getting off the bus at my stop and could see that they were sweet young men far from their families, doing what they considered to be their sacred duty. This book is not about them. But true to the book, they suddenly got transferred and that was the end of a charming, casual friendship. Their replacements were all holy business. Now THEY were the guys in the book. Sad.
