Drinking Water: a History --- by James Salzman. Eminently readable, well organized, well researched, with lots odf references and footnotes, written by a man who’s qualifications suggest that he should know his water, this book is well written about a subject most of us have never considered. Unless the tap went dry; the corner store ran out of bottled water or we went camping beyond the reach of our water supply. Water is difficult. Not the book but the subject matter. Where to start? The important term here, of course, is the drinking part of drinking water. So where to start? The nature of drinking water? Where does drinking water come from? How do we produce water safe for drinking. After all, in the wild, water is loaded with pathogens and disease vectors that sicken and kill? And then how do we get this good water to where its needed and who pays for all of this and how? Of course there’s a lot more to it and in Drinking Water than just that. Is than book more riveting than the latest Dan Brown? Of course not. Will it keep you involved? I think so.
