Wonderful book. The material was well researched and added an element of reality to everything. Hard to put down

Written by a professor of the history of science ABOUT a prof. of the history of science, it comes as no surprise that Deborah Harkness includes actual historical figures in a time-travelling scenario. If you study Elizabeth I or John Dee or any of the others mentioned, you'll find how richly she has portrayed them. In addition, the Shadow of Night fleshes out the characters of the main protagonists, Matthew & Diane, to make their actions & emotions more understandable and relate-able. As the 2nd book in an historical fiction trilogy, it was bound to cause some to be less entertained, but this author does what she does with intention, so the loose threads of SON should be tied up in book 3. Love this trilogy!

enjoyed this book as much as the first, but it is a little more graphic in the copulation parts after Mathew and Diana get married. I am ready to read the 3rd one also.

OMG!! What a great book!! Can't wait for the conclusion to the trilogy!!
I love how the author assumes that you've read the first book... and doesn't waste your time going back over the events that happened prior to this book.
