Disappointing movie with a cast of big name actors. Wasn't really a tale of abuse although there was some........just Michael's selective memory.

5 stars!

If you want to know what it is like to grow up as a child with an abusive father, this film is for you. This film can help you understand your friends who talk about parental abuse.

If you are an adult who was abused as a child, this film can be healing. The scene that starts around 1 hr 13 minutes is the most powerful one. That coupled with the movie with the birthday party for Michael as he turned 12 after the incidents in the scene mentioned above.

My mother never stood up for me. My father was like the one in this movie but more violent. I am thankful s..ual abuse was not involved.

I love this movie!

Amazing actors, but the movie is extremely depressing. Its about how toxic anger can break apart a family, so all we really see are a lot of angry people abusing each other. Not a lot of fun. Skip this one.

Not quiet clear how the denouement came about. From flashbacks issues seemed to have been sorted out in the past, which made the story line pointless.
Leave serious drama to the Brits who know that slow ponderous stares do not good drama make, unless the actors are especially skilled in revealing their thoughts and emotions through body language.
I think a lot must have been cut from the original movie...

Good – Fireflies in the Garden (2008) 99 min. Solid film from start to end with great performances and a powerful story. I said it before and I’ll say it again, Willem Dafoe films are good when he’s in a supporting role; which is what he is in this film playing an autocratic dictatorial father. Lots of plot packed into this film that runs under the two hour mark. Enjoyable film from start to finish.

Sometimes hard to follow with all the flashbacks. This is the reason I only gave it 3 stars. Good cast

A disturbing yet hopeful drama about a family whose members each bear burdens of suffering. Wilem Dafoe plays a father who is extraordinarily verbally and psychologically abusive to both wife and son. However, the son's paternal inflictions allow him to be sympathetic to his grieving cousin and, remarkably, as he longs to have a loving relationship with his father, forges on to achieve reconciliation. The characters are interesting as well as their struggles to be better than they were.
On a side note: I found the treatment of frogs and fireflies somewhat disturbing.

As a realistic depiction of the abuse cycle and how it continues from one generation to the next, this is very good. But as a realistic depiction of the breaking of the abuse cycle, it's a total failure.

I kept waiting for Michael to realize that the promises of an abuser don't count for much, and that he has to stop being an enabler if he wants to stop being abused. Instead the abusers (both his father and his wife) say, "I'll never do it again" and then magically don't. It's the Disney version of the breaking of the abuse cycle. Very disappointing.
