This book explores past inventions of perfect nation-states. They tend to be totalitarian, not free. Contemporary America is facing totalitarian US Federal Government and also state governments and city governments. This book is a warning to 9 of 10 Americans who are refusing to take action against the totalitarian destruction of everything America has always stood for.
It is an awakening to read about several formulations by Europeans intent on creating the perfect functioning of a large group. Plato wrote one called The Republic.
Confucius formulated one in 500BC. Most Americans would not want to live in a totalitarian country . But we do indeed live under totalitarian rule.

Comment
Add a CommentIn Ameritopia, Levin spends some time discussing the thought basis for the US Constitution. James Madison is quoted several times, from Federalist Papers writings. Levin never once quotes from Alexander Hamilton, who wrote most of the Federalist Papers and was the first Secretary of the Treasury. (Hamilton is included only in another quote which Levin is forced to include without edit). Hamilton was arguably the Father of the Administrative State. Without Hamilton, many of the structures we take for granted today may have turned out much differently. Without a solid Federal government, including taking on the state's debts into a federal debt, it is questionable if the nation would have survived to its present form.
