Here is the real inside story--not the one about the Stieg Larsson phenomenon, but rather the love story of a man and a woman whose lives came to be guided by politics and love, coffee and activism, writing and friendship. Only one person knows that story well enough to tell it with authority. Eva and Stieg shared everything, starting when they were both eighteen until his untimely death 32 years later. Here, Eva accepts the daunting challenge of telling the story of their shared life, steeped in love and sharpened in the struggle for justice and human rights. She chooses to tell it in short, spare, lyrical chapters, like snapshots, the inside account of how he wrote, why he wrote, who the sources were for Lisbeth and his other characters--graciously answering Stieg's readers' most pressing questions--and at the same time telling us about love and loss, death, betrayal, and the mistreatment of women.--From publisher description.

In this very personal account, Eva Gabrielsson tells us about her relationship with Stieg Larsson, the Swedish author who became an overnight sensation when his Millennium trilogy was published posthumously—The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo being the first in the series. He was only 50 years old when he died of a heart attack, and had spent 32 of his years with Eva Gabrielsson.

Larsson devoted his life as a journalist to fight the abuse of women. With his fictional work he delivered his quest to the hands of millions of readers, and, later on, to moviegoers everywhere. There is a very sad irony to this real-life story: Since Gabrielsson and Larsson never married and he died intestate (without a will), under Swedish law she received nothing. Larsson’s estranged family (his father and brother) received not only his financial inheritance, but also the rights of the late author’s trilogy. A fourth book—one that Gabrielsson doesn’t consider faithful to the purpose and style of Larsson’s work—has already been published.

In Gabrielsson’s book we get to know of the couple’s life together and of her struggle to gain control of Larsson’s legacy. (Submitted by Eva).

Interesting details on the career of Stieg Larsson and his 32 year relationship with Eva Gabrielsson. While the author digs into some of the legal battle over Larsson's writings and property after his death, most of the book describes his journalism career and the national context of a surge in right-wing racist political and thug groups in which it took place. All in all, you get the sense that they were a happy couple, passionate about bringing human inequity to light and eeking out a living doing it (though the author is an architect, she helps Larsson in much of his efforts).

For such heavy material this is effectively a beach read. Easy to finish. I'm happy to have read it.

“There are Things I Want You to Know” about Stieg Larsson and Me
By Eva Gabrielsson 2011

Everyone knows the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson with the books “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo; The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.” When Stieg Larsson died unexpectedly in 2004, he was just in the process of getting his first book published and didn’t live to see the huge success that his books would become, translated into many languages and made into films, both in his native Sweden and in Hollywood. What many people do not know is that this was only one facet of his life. Many people do not about his life as an activist and his relentless pursuit for social justice and human rights. Who better to tell this story but his partner of 32 years Eva Gabrielsson. This is a fascinating book about both Stieg and Eva and the incredible life and drive they both shared. Since his death she has struggled to survive without him and to obtain control over Larsson’s literary estate. It is an easy read written in chapters like snapshots of their life. You will come to appreciate just how truly driven and talented Stieg Larsson was and how together they created the Millennium trilogy

While the book itself is sketchy in places, and consistently inconsistent no fan of Lisbeth Salander and Stieg Larsson should skip it. Everyone will have their own opinion but mine is that this woman, and in no small measure Larsson's memory, have been seriously screwed over by people {family} who had absolutely no part in his life over most of it, and organizations which have consciously chosen to make money at the expense of ethical treatment of Eva G.
