Faith
A Novel
Audiobook CD - 2011 | Unabridged ed
Sheila McGann is estranged from her complicated family. But when her older brother Art, pastor of a large suburban parish, finds himself at the center of a scandal, Sheila returns to Boston, ready to fight for him. Her strict mother lives in a state of angry denial; her younger brother Mike has already convicted his brother in his heart. But most disturbing of all is Art himself, who persistently dodges Sheila's questions and refuses to defend himself.

Add a CommentThough the core issue in Faith is a priest's alleged sexual abuse of a child, Haigh's novel concentrates more on how the uncertainty surrounding the allegation affects relationships. Told primarily by the accused priest's sister, the story slowly reveals secrets in the family's past and unfolds how each member of the family is challenged by - and deals with - the allegations. Also important to the story is how those who are both close to and distant from the priest's relationship with the boy might interpret it, and how it might be used to personal advantage.
I didn't find Faith to be a riveting read, but it is a well-written and strong exploration of how we judge others, whether we know the truth about them or not.
I liked this book. A slow start but as each personality emerged it became interesting. All of Sheila's family had something going on in their lives that caused them problems. Art became attached to a young boy and his mother. All sorts of complications followed. Mike came close to losing all he held dear because of foolish decisions. I keep it brief to avoid spoilers. not sure I liked how it ended, but understand not all stories, like real life can have a happy ending.
