Pirates --- DVD --- The History Channel. This is not a swash-buckling adventure movie about piracy on the bounding main. And while this documentary does deal with the likes of Captain Kidd and Blackbeard it isn’t meant to entertain small fry. Rather what it is a documentary accounting of those social outcasts, usually, but not always men, who became lawless pirates. We have the tale of Francis Drake, later knighted by his queen, who attacked Spanish treasure ships at the pleasure of his English monarch as he waged a kind of economic warfare against the might of Spain. We have the life of Henry Morgan, also subsequently knighted, who, after a career as pirate, was made governor of Port Royal, Jamaica. Children will find this video disappointing. No big screen Captain Hooks here. Instead, what we get is a studies examination of the era of piracy: the vessels used by pirates; their weapons; their tactics and an insight into the kind of people they were. Interesting viewing.
