Dracula. A name of horror, depravity and the darkest sensuality. Yet the real Dracula was just as alluring, just as terrifying, his tale not one of a monster but of a man ... and a contradiction. His tale is told by those who knew him best.

It must be me. Thi sis the second book by this author that I have tried to read and given up on less than half way through. I find the writing style to be undechiperable. I can’t understand who these characters are and care less about them. I think there is a lot of historical fiction out there that is much, much better. I think I’m done with MR. Humphreys!

As would be expected from a novel based on Vlad the impaler, this book is filled with the brutal dealings of the era and the man. I did not find the story really enthralling and it was hard to like, admire or respect a man who resorted to such tactics, though maybe it is only because he was not the victor, as while he was extreme in his ruthlessness he was not any worse than most rulers. My inability to sympathize or engage with any of the characters is more than likely the ultimate reason for my so/so attitude toward the book.

I thought the author did a wonderful job presenting the story and my favorite parts of the book were the room of people reminiscing about the past and their remembrances of Vlad, rather than the story of Vlad itself. I found many parts of the book quite disturbing, as I am sure was intended, but also quite intriguing, despite that.

Well written and very interesting. The Turks were trying to take over middle Europe from the Christians and yet the Europeans would not join forces to stop them when if they did...who knows. Timely parallels.
