“Don’t judge a book by its cover” is a cliché usually applied to people’s appearances. Before I opened this book, by British cultural historian Ruth Brandon, I assumed I was going to learn how two cosmetic giants, Helena Rubinstein and L’Oréal, continually pull fast ones on women like me thanks to their cunning copywriters and my preoccupation with my appearance. Instead, I found myself navigating through 80 years of anti-Semitism and right-wing extremism in France."
