An irresistible blend of history, myth, and misadventure, A Voyage Long and Strange captures the wonder and drama of first contact. Vikings, conquistadors, French voyageurs--these and many others roamed an unknown continent in quest of grapes, gold, converts, even a cure for syphilis. Though most failed, their remarkable exploits left an enduring mark on the land and people encountered by late-arriving English settlers.--From publisher description.

Chancing to stop in Plymouth, Massachusetts, journalist and history major Horwitz realizes with a jolt that he has only the faintest idea what happened in North America between 1492 and the Pilgrims landing in 1620. Following the model of his superb Blue Latitudes, Horwitz retells and retraces several overlooked European voyages of discovery and settlement. His route will take him to the Norse settlement in Newfoundland, Columbus's first landfall in the Dominican Republic, Coronado's wild goose chase in the Southwest and De Soto's in the Southeast, to St Augustine, Roanoke, Jamestown, and finally Plymouth. Along the way he talks with whites, blacks, and Indians, scholars and kooks, to find echoes of the forgotten past in the present. Highly recommended.

A fascinating book. Finding out about de Soto's trip through the South was a real eye-opener. Also shows a very different picture of early America. Loved it.

A lively tour and summary of early North American discovery and exploration (by non-aboriginals). I was annoyed by the interruption of the narrative by his own story of how he is researching and travelling for the writing of the book. Because it covers so much, its a bit lightweight, although there is a lengthy bibliographic essay at the end.

You'll learn alot about early North American history and laugh a little bit in the process...well-written and researched.

Need to find the equivalent book for Canadian history. Very fun and I like that he covers the not-so-well-known parts of American history.

Another great book by Horwitz, exploring the nearly forgotten century of exploration in North American between Columbus in 1492 and the Pilgrims in the 1620s...!

Tony Horwitz recreates historical voyages of European exploration and conquest of North America. The book intermingles Horwitz's modern day experiences with historical facts and accounts. Funny, irreverent, and informative this book is great for readers of history who don't want a textbook.

The first chapter about Viking explorers in North America captivated me, as well as Tony Horwitz's travel anecdotes to places most of us might never think or plan to visit. I enjoyed his account and visual descriptions of what it is like to trek up to the far northern reaches of Canada. He encounters locals working in a lonely "living" Viking museum and then navigates to a first peoples pow-wow miles away. Other chapters take you to the American Southwest, the Great Plains, and the Dominican Republic.

I read this book to kill time while traveling and waiting in airports, and I had a great time!

This book was well written. It was informative without being dry. I think it shows that the history lessons that we are taught in school are determined by the victors and the powers that be. A rich book that cannot be read through too quickly. I worthwhile read if you are looking for something to savor.
