I picked this book up during winter break. I had previously heard a lot about the series, so I decided to try it out. The first couple hundred pages were a bit tedious, but after awhile I got attached to the characters and got sucked into the plot. Loosely summarized, this book/series is about a journalist, a remarkable girl, and the injustices of society, to sum it all up. I ended up becoming hooked on Lisbeth, Mickael, Harriet, and all of the other interesting characters. I believe the unique characters bring more to the book than the writing style, which is probably just a parallel to Larsson's original phrasing, because the English version is a translation. Nonetheless, I recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read!

Fantastic book; loved the twists and turns in the story, and it was refreshing to hear of a story based in Sweden. Can't wait to start the second book!

Amazing story, keeps your head and emotions moving a lot. The reader of the audiobook version did a great job.

DavidBale's comment is exactly on target and cannot be improved upon --- important to understand that only quite recently has there even been a female detective in Sweden, it is really a relatively conservative country, and financially moving more conservatively since the 1980s, when the dumped out their mentally ill just as they did in America. Also, the Bonnier family, which is financially connected with all the anti-Assange (WikiLeaks) people, finances the occasional trip by Karl Rove to talk at "libertarian [read rightwing]" think tanks.

This book holds the reader (listener) in suspense and completely enthralled in the book. One of the best books that I've read in awhile.

What a wonderful read! I love the way Lisbeth's mind works. I highly recommend also the Swedish movie version of this book.

Disappointed. I thought I was reading a screenplay.

once I got used to the names, it was full speed ahead. The book's a good read; spell binding.

Larsson's novel in translation was recommended to me as a "real page turner." I should have been warned by the cliche. The book turned out to be ladened with trivial details, full of artificial dialogue and stilted language. Clearly not a page turner but a page burner.

Mikael is a Swedish journalist who is hired by a wealthy industrialist to solve the mystery of his granddaughter's disappearance. He hires Lisbeth to help him research, and she saves his life when Harriet's father tries to torture Mikael. Loved the character of Lisbeth who is urban, self educated, independent and super smart. The sadistic father of Harriet is a little hard to believe, buy makes for a good thriller.
