A real eye-opener of a book! I wonder if it could work in cities, since we all live in apts. on top of each other. I'm definitely going to check out the websites mentioned.

This is the best book to start a neighborhood-book-club, Ever! Even if neighbors can’t attend, the reading and inevitable discussion will enrich the neighborhood by instilling in each individual reader the trust that – with care and perseverance – we can each become nodes in a web others are weaving with us, unseen, and each for our own reasons; together we are the fabric of community.

Admittedly, Lovenheim is a skilled interviewer, an intuitive man, and an insightful observer. Nevertheless, since he as an individual could succeed at cultivating a potent bit of community into bloom in a neighborhood *purposefully designed* to house loners (my word for people whose value of privacy and status trump the need for connection), I’m positive that it can be done in any North-American street, where one individual
~ stumbles on a personally compelling reason to realize his/her desire for community is a priority,
~ has the wisdom not to take rejection personally, and
~ puts forth the effort to seek out neighbors with heart in hand.

If you have not found it yet, let this book’s tender determination be your reason to get off the fence and meet (and meet and meet) the people who can make your life truly sweet.
