Opinion

From Library Staff

After his wife dies, an elderly balloon salesman decides to go on the trip to South America that he and his wife always planned to take. A reminder that you're never too old to fulfill your dreams. Great fun for the whole family.

I watched this twice and every viewing gives me a different perspective of what I missed.
Be kind to the elderly is a subliminal message but has humor too; 'my name is Russell, and the dog Doug comes to greet the two & don't forget to watch the extra scene that is attached to that; I watch Up when I need to remember there is kindness in the world with all the other things in the day to day crap.

five balloon houses for bring out a positive feeling at the end of film

A fantastic opening twenty minutes gets slogged down by the middle of the movie with some B-grade Disney/Pixar efforts.

Crazy ,but believable story.
I liked older protagonist, Asian-American sidekick & dog with universal translator for that touch of science fiction.
Surprisingly bittersweet beginning on adult subjects.

My family & I really enjoyed "Up"! It has an engrossing story line that expands and draws you in as the movie progresses. There is humor, danger, a main character with real depth and emotions that has his hardened heart softened and restored by his adventures and a young man who learns more about the real world and how older people see it and are effected by it. There are cute characters and ruthless characters determined to forever change the life of others. The film is well worth watching and is very satisfying.

An older gentleman, Carl Fredricksen, is a balloon salesman. His idol as a child was Charles Munts, who says he has discovered a bird that is very rare. People dismiss his claim and do not believe him, so he says he will go there and won’t return without the bird. Carl ends up meeting a girl named Ellie, and eventually gets married in the future. They never get to go to Paradise Falls together as Ellie dies. The lonely gentleman attempts to travel to the falls by attaching balloons to his house one day, but a boy is also taken along with him, which he does not realize until later. From here, we follow the great adventure of Carl and Russel, the boy who got taken along.

The movie UP is one of the most heart-warming children's movies that you could ever imagine. Within the film, many different topics such as losing a loved one, losing a house, and bonding with others is addressed in a way that children can both enjoy and understand. The close connection between a man and his dog as well as two strangers on the same journey is indescribable, yet this movie finds a way to tie everything together in a very smooth and entertaining way. The relationship between Carl and Ellie will warm your heart, break it and then put it back together again because of how "goals" it is. Whether you're young, old, or somewhere in between, this movie will make you feel things like you never have before, and bring you back to times where it felt like you were on top of the world.

Up was interesting, meaningful and funny all packed into one DVD. I honestly loved this movie so much, it was like a breath of fresh air and the characters were so well developed and thought out. The main characters are so contrasted in personality but they are at the same time the perfect pair. The movie starts out with showing the main characters life, and his wife passing away. One day he plans on flying away with his house using helium balloons. It all works out; except he has someone else on board his flying house. Bubbly and cute, Russel was just trying to be a good Scout when he got stowed away onto the house. Now Carl and Russel must stay together in the wild jungle where they land and meet a vibrant assortment of characters that you will indeed fall in love with. The two discover how much they both need each other, too, and the power of unity and love. There is nothing more I can say but that I love, love, love this movie and highly recommend everyone to watch it! You can see Carl melting away all the anger and hatred in his heart and seeing life in a new aspect, whilst Russel finds a new home in a place he never expected. Rating 5/5
