You have to have a certain patience to read a Turtledove book anymore. The key is to know which characters are worth reading and which are only good for skimming. He also uses a lot of the same turns of phrase and jargon amongst characters. Each time you return to a character during the story you have to slog through some re-hashing of what he or she just did. If a particular soldier dislikes another you will be reminded of this constantly, and usually with the same descriptive language.

All that being said the overarching, strategic story is usually enjoyable. He's willing to look for plausible alternate histories to write about. This is what I read for. If you love history and what if stories, and you can learn the proper skimming and skipping techniques, this book is worth spending some time in.

Hitler's War --- by Harry Turtledove. Alternate history: change a few key events in the run up to WW ll or in the war itself and see how it changes to outcome. You might even have the allies lose the war. An intriguing idea. But poorly executed. After 100 pages I'm still not hooked. There are just too many strands each representing the events as experienced by the differing protagonists but so far nothings happened to advance the plot. I'm not patient enough to wait another 100 pages for the plot to move forward, for a little suspense and excitement. Dare I say, boring?

Another interesting alternate history from Turtledove, although I felt he had too many similar characters this go around. Why for instance, are there storylines for Czech, French, German and British infantryman? It would have been better to only have one or two infantrymen and have an artillery man or something else, providing a different POV.

Very typical Turtledove, but I like his stuff usually.
