Mostly a family story. during tough times. How can a People like the Germans go through two wars, with all the insanities and still be on top of their game in the 21st century and be the envy, economically, of most of the world. Where would they be if there hadn't been wars that destroyed their country twice?

This book's appeal for me:1) it brings WWII down to the scale of one family's experience (albeit one very privileged family) and 2) morality is explored with courage and complexity.
