I began to read, and then, it was no desire to continue, despite excellent language form of the narrative. Because of what she described, I thought- every day you hear and see in world news about so much injustice in life, that I wanted to avoid another emotional suffering reading about events described in this book. But I continued reading, and often in my head raised a question-how was that possible? So much cruelty, indifference, betrayal, not understanding reasons of certain attitude of many characters....
It seemed to me, that there is a lack, so to speak, of the author's emotions. As if she is watching everything from the bird's eye view and limiting herself to stating.

Even the people committing the worst atrocities are convincing, even likable. The author has no sense of humor, but a great sense of characters.

A wonderful, fictional account of a small town in China just after the Cultural Revolution. A very compelling story that gave me a better understanding of Chinese history.
