Frankly, this movie was an utter disappointment. I expected so much from the picture that won 9 Oscars but comparing to 'My Fair Lady' this movie is a bland and boring flop. The story raises your eyebrows and could be simply summarized as 'two old hags try to prostitute a teenage girl to a rich playboy'. The acting is wooden and theatrical, characters are unlikable, and music is uninspiring. Really, I'm shocked that anyone in their right mind could award anything to this mediocre product and choose it for the Best Picture over the brilliant 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof'!

Can Gigi be enjoyed as anything but a guilty pleasure? The story would be squirmy but for the world-weary cynicism infusing Louis Jourdan's and Maurice Chevalier's roles in particular, as eligible and aging roués respectively of fin de siècle Paris. This is a "society" where outsider women–mistresses or courtesans–enjoy limited but lavish privileges until no longer desired. From the musical theatre team who also created My Fair Lady, it's hard not to see structural similarities in this Colette-derived pre-feminist tale of a courtesan-in-waiting who breaks with family tradition to snag the playboy (Louis Jourdan) in legal wedlock by the end. The matter-of-fact regard with which the social inequities of philandering and quasi-courtship are codified and flouted invite a contemporary update or transposition.

I checked out this movie to see and hear Maurice Chevalier sing. He was the best. Story line rather boring. Some of the music great, 9 Oscars. Watch special features about Million Dollar Nickle and a cartoon on disc one. May have to watch disc 2. Thank you dash board reviewers.

Femininity before the rise of Feminism. In Belle Epoque Paris, women found fulfillment in loving and pleasing men. This is one of the most beautiful films ever made, with wonderful costumes and Art Nouveau sets. Its contrivances are overdone, but its charm is still irresistible. Leslie Caron is magical in the title role.

GREAT 1958 romantic musical comedy set in Paris with fabulous scenery/film work. I've had a great time viewing some top notch musicals for first time recently.
Had to look up her birth date, but I was a bit surprised that Leslie Caron (as Gigi) was 27 years old at time of filming - but they do make her look a bit youngish at start of film. All the casting/performances were very high quality.
Lots of great songs, etc. and I can see/agree how it won Best Picture for 1958 (when I was too young to be interested in or appreciate this kind of film).
Glad I could see it now - thanks, KCLS!

A beautifully filmed, romantic, funny, and sophisticated musical, with lots of great music. (It does not get much better than Lerner & Loewe!) The screenplay is excellent and the cast is wonderful. Very entertaining and touching.

Stunning performance by Maurice Chevalier....oldie, but goodie....they don't make movies like this anymore....I'd say an all time classic, if you know what I mean

One of my all-time favorite movies. The DVD also contained the original French movie, with subtitles, on which Gigi was based.

See Louis Jourdan (1921-2015) in his definitive role as wealthy Parisian playboy Gaston Lachaille. The musical features the friendship and romance of Gaston Lachaille, and Gigi. One tired of the constraints of Parisian high society, and one being schooled to become a high society mistress (you can guess which is which). It is easily one of my favourite films. The characters are charming, the music is beautiful, and luscious sets and costume are a banquet for the eyes. Gigi won a total of 9 Academy awards, including: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Music. On the whole, a sheer delight!

Cute, but best picture? What the merde, as they say in France.
