The Hunger Games is a singularly unique novel in that it has a female lead character who's brashly independent and belligerent. Conflict after conflict is presented in seamless transition by the author. I especially appreciated that it's narrated in first-person so readers can immediately infer the point of view, opinions, and emotions of the protagonist. Additionally, this book is able to cover deeper topics relevant to our world such as the necessity (or lack thereof) of war, freedom & oppression, and socioeconomic class divisions that define how well a person can live. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a storyline that can still be applied to some aspects of our society.

The first novel of “The Hunger Games” trilogy is set in the future nation of Panem which used to be the USA. Panem is divided into thirteen districts with District 13 destroyed. A girl and a boy between ages 12-18 from each district (Tributes) are forced by The Capitol to compete in the Hunger Games. This game is a violent fight to the death where the last person alive is the victor. The whole country is required to watch these games and are considered entertainment for The Capitol. A girl named Katniss from district 12 was chosen along with a boy named Peeta for the Hunger Games. Katniss must survive the Hunger Games with the help of her sharp archery skills and a fake romantic relationship with Peeta.
What I liked about this book was that the different sides of each character were shown, the reader gets to know the main characters very well. I also liked getting to know the common behaviors and mindsets of various districts. What I disliked about this book was the fake romantic relationship between Katniss and Peeta. I believe that the fake relationship became an unnecessary burden in the games for both characters. I also think the author, Suzanne Collins, could have given more background information on the creation and history of Panem and the Hunger games.

This might as well be the most interesting book of I’ve ever read. No matter how many times I tell myself to stop, I just couldn’t put it down. Lots of thrill. It’s a must read!

It's hard to write commentary on a book series that has become part of popular culture. Has everything already been said? When I read the first book in The Hunger Games trilogy I had that thrilling feeling of discovering something extraordinary. The books are ripe with symbolism and imagery. I have read the books over and over and each time is a new reading with fresh insights.

The Hunger Games takes place in a dystopian world full of poverty and starvation. The country is split into 12 districts, and as punishment for a previous rebellion, one girl and one boy from each district must enter a competition where the last survivor will be the victor. Katniss Everdeen, the narrator of the story, chooses to volunteer in place of her sister Primrose. She is joined by Peeta, a boy she knows. The pair is mentored by Haymitch, the only winner from district twelve who has since become a drunkard. Throughout the competition, Katniss creates alliances and perseveres despite the harsh conditions. Katniss must decide what lengths she will go to in order to survive and how much she will tolerate being used for entertainment.
The story is very well-written. New challenges constantly pop up for Katniss to face, and it is impossible to predict where the story will go next. Katniss’s character is also well-defined. She is strong and compassionate, and she tries her best to save others. Another big part of the story is the drama between Katniss and Peeta. Peeta has stated that he likes Katniss, but Katniss is conflicted about her feelings for him and a boy she has known her whole life in Gale. This drama is not overdone and adds to Katniss’s character as well as occasional bits of humor. The overall themes of love and sacrifice make a powerful story, and one that will certainly become your favorite.

In a place once known as North America, in the ruins of the lands lies the nation of Panem. A glorified Capitol surrounded by twelve districts. The Capitol is cruel and holds power over the districts by forcing each district to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen each year to participate in the lethal Hunger Games. The game is a literal fight to death that is televised on tv live over Panem. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen never thought she would live to see the day she would be put in the Hunger Games, but that changes when her younger sister Primrose was picked. Katniss bravely steps forwards and volunteers in Primrose's place. Katniss has always been close to dead before and she's always managed to survive the worst. This is all a second nature to her. Katniss needs to win so she can be there for her family and friends, so she is forced to make choices that pit survival against love. Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favour.

Suzanne Collins has written a masterful novel, The Hunger Games. In the confines of District 12, a part of Panem, Katniss Everdeen enters the draft for the 74th Hunger Games. In The Hunger Games, each district, from 1-12, is required to volunteer two participants, a boy and a girl, to the Capitol. They are then put into an arena and forced to fight to the death. The last one standing wins. Katniss is forced to enter the games to save her sister. Will she be able to win? The Hunger Games is a great book, full of interesting characters, action, tragedy, and triumph. Make sure to read it!
