The author started out writing about paper. A French academic, he covers the destruction of libraries under many different circumstances around the globe in different eras. As a professional librarian with some background in world history, this was fascinating beyond hope. As a child, you learn about Alexander and Persia. Here, we learn it is one of the great crimes of humanity, Alex burned all the incredible libraries as he conquered. One of many interesting bits found here.
