Neither a novel or a collection of short stories but a collection of fictional biographies of non-existent right-wing writers. By turns heart-breaking and ridiculous, it is less an experiment in form than a perfect match of imagination and technique.

Perhaps these fictional pieces will intermingle in the reader's memory with the biographical details of real people. If so, Bolaño will have achieved one of the loftiest goals a writer of fiction can hope for; the creation of fiction that goes beyond describing or explaining the world to one that interacts with the world and changes it.

In my opinion, the best of Bolano's short novels.
