A collection of low-key paranormal stories following a painfully shy and socially awkward museum document curator in the 1920s. My unexpected favourite was the incubus story, which surprised me with its subtle emotional depth (why am I getting misty-eyed over a predator?!). Most of the other stories revolve around documents the protagonist bumps into at work or old 'friends' from his boarding school days. Readers looking for blatant monsters or jump-scares will be disappointed, but fans of subtle Gothic horror should enjoy this collection.
Sarah Monette is that rare and precious thing, a writer with a deft hand for both novels and short stories. _The Bone Key_ is fantastic.
I became very fond of the severely introverted Booth while reading this collection & I hope the author writes some more stories featuring him.
