I loved the great partnership of Lady Abigail Irene Garrett and the debonair Sebastian de Ulloa in solving crimes both supernatural and not -- but always gruesome. Elizabeth Bear has a way of writing that sticks with you -- it was very hard to let these characters go when the book ended (and as a series of short stories, it doesn't end in a way that put the story to rest --- you WANT to know more.

This is early Steampunk, with flying dirigibles and horse drawn carriages, in an alternate history world of the Americas in 1899 while the English control the NE and France has LA and the Spanish have the Californias.
And it is also a fascinating account of vampires, as E. Bear conceives them.
