Great book with great insight into the life of slaves before the civil war and the attitudes of the White Americans about slavery. I liked the commentary for the most part but disagree with Gates idea that Stowe sexualized Uncle Tom, I just didn't see that as a part of his characterization.

Read this for the first time or reread this edition with insightful comments by Henry Louis Gates. A revealing look at the American psyche pre-Civil War. Maligned by later generations, but a phenomenon in her time, Stowe helped shape the fervor that precipitated the Civil War.
