Don't waste your time. If you want to waste your time as little as possible just read the 2nd book, Elfstones. It was ok. First book was like a warm up for the 2nd, the 3rd book simply has no excuse. Weakest female characters ever, especially in the 3rd. Not relatable, just irritatingly weak and pathetic. As for the comments that read Brooks is a great writer, I sadly will never be able to verify because it wasn't witnessed in any of these 3 books. I know he's written a lot more in the Shannara series and I will never bother to read any of them. 3 strikes you're out, Brooks.

I wanted to like it more than I did. Cool concept, but I returned it after 350-something pages. It just didn't get any better. And I was just trying to finish it to finish it, but I was so unseduced I gave up not even caring if they got the sword or not.

The first one may have been a little like LOTR but the book is still amazing! I have read the first and second, and I am now reading the third book! So far it is a really good book!

While the Sword of Shannara may be very similar to the Lord of the Rings don't give up on the the series, Terry Brooks is a great writer. If you really can't stand the similarities between the Sword of Shannara and the Lord of Rings, then starting from the Elfstones may be the best way to go with series. Seriously though his new stuff is great, and you should definitely try Terry Brooks if you're into adventure fantasy.
