I love the way Paulo writes, however I wasn't very happy with this book. It was a great idea but the whole book was incredibly negative and the ending didn't help change that.

A sleepy village is forced to choose between the forces of good and evil. Choose a sacrifice and be rewarded the 11 gold bars, or kill no one and be left empty-handed by the mysterious stranger? All eyes turn to Miss Prym, the barmaid who delivers the dilemma to the village folk or to Bertha, the widowed villager who seems to be deemed as the old witch and the first person to witness the stranger set foot into town.

1/2 star. A struggle between good and evil unfolds in this fable. When a stranger arrives in an isolated mountain village, he brings with him a devilish offer: If anybody in the town is murdered within a week, every surviving resident will receive a fortune in gold. His evil instigation throws the townspeople into a moral dilemma. This is a moral parable with many references to Biblical temptations. I prefer my "morality plays" to be much more subtle - where there is not a "devil" figure laying out a temptation. I would rather see real people coping with more subtle moral dilemmas. This felt more like a sermon than a novel. Not my cup of tea. Cannot recommend!!

A quick read, and like The Alchemist, this book offers insight into the machinations and moral dilemmas involved in the human experience. Cohelo's simple, clear writing style shines and is extraordinarily appropriate for the content.
