Thoroughly captivating story of what one individual can accomplish if one sets their mind to something. Aaron Lansky needed a lot of help, but had dogged determination on his side. He is one of the people responsible for a revival in the study of Yiddish language and culture that could have easily been lost along with the many Jews who lost their lives in the Holocaust. This story unfolds with lots of humor and some tragedy, and clever anecdotes about characters like Marjorie Guthrie, Woody Guthrie's wife, Leon Uris, even Saul Bellow. Highly recommended!

Loved this offbeat book on misfit student finding a calling & making friends to unlikely older people.
A lowbrow hybrid language that borrowed words from other languages that got killed by Second War, users getting old, young learning English & nationalist snobby Israel's formerly rabbi only Hebrew as official language edict.
Dumpster diving official job description in author's resume?
Story went full circle as people in Eastern Europe post-Cold war need help rediscovering their roots.
A real grind translating old Yiddish novels to English with limited resources.
