I just loved the cover of the BeachBoys, from THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT documentary: BARBARA ANN, sung by Keith Moon, the kinetic drummer, who was soon to leave this earth, when it was recorded. Keith only did one solo album, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOON, and nothing on it is as good as Barbara Ann. YOUNG MAN'S BLUES cooks at a very fast rate, indeed. HAPPY JACK without PICTURES OF LILY is just as good. WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN sounded very good last night as a closing number. Unfortunately, this cd does not have Keith's Beach Boy cover--what a larf, but the dvd does, plus a decent amount of MODS history. Next, see QUADROPHENIA, and you'll be on your way to understanding THE WHO phenomenon. P.S. MY WIFE, Entwhistle's singing entry, sounds best on WHO'S NEXT. He plays the horns, as well, on the long outro on that album, and it just sounds excellent.

The soundtrack to the just for fans 1979 documentary (or "rockumenatry," if you will) about the mighty Who, currently celebrating their 50th (!) anniversary. This includes some of their biggest and best songs ("My Generation," "Baba O'Riley," "Pinball Wizard"), but this isn't really a greatest hits collection, as these are live performances from concerts, festivals (Woodstock), and TV performances. A highlight is the awesome mini-opera "A Quick One," taken from the Rolling Stones ' Rock & Roll Circus. If your remember the escalating revenge sequence in "Rushmore," it's set to part of "A Quick One." Definitely one for the serious Who fan. Also check out "Odds and Sods" and the "Isle of Wight" live album.

All of the copies of this CD in the SPL system were put into cases that have scratched the CD so that the last track skips. I have checked out all of them, that is how I know this. This needs to be fixed. The last track is one of The Who's biggest hits and it skips all the way through if it plays at all. I have brought this to the attention of staff at the Columbia Branch. Oddly enough, twice this happened, they would check the CD in and see that I had requested another copy and then try to hand it back to me! So again I would explain that the case has scratched the CD is such a way that it will not play the last track. It is like a book with pages torn out of the last chapter, any archivist would replace it. I am unemployed right now, but If you like I could buy the SPL a copy and donate it. Please fix this problem. Thank you. B. Macklin

PS: Please take this scratched CD out of the system and replace it with a new one!
