Directed by Robert Gardner and narrated by Ben Kingsley, this is a 160-minute 3-part documentary about the spectacular story of the Islamic power and faith from the birth of the Prophet Muhammed to the peak of the Ottoman Empire under the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent.
Historical reenactments and a remarkable exposition of Islamic art, artifacts and architecture are combined with interviews of scholars from around the world.
Unfortunately, however, today's complicated situation of Islam remains untouched in this film.

I was very disappointed in this, which was so boring that I couldn't get past about the half-way point of the first episode. The very static re-enactments add nothing to the soporific narration. The talking heads are almost all middle-aged or older white American males - really? in 2004? I realize PBS is going to have an American approach or basis, but most of their other productions have contributed to me having higher expectations. This is the kind of thing that reinforces some peoples' belief, that history is boring.
