“There is the staying.
Staying because of Kara and Locke and all that they will never
be except trapped.
Staying because for them, time is running out and I am their
their last chance.
Staying for the old Jenna and all she owes Kara and Locke and maybe all the new Jenna owes them, too.
Staying because of ten percent and all I hope I might be.
Staying because of Mr. Bender’s erased life and regrets.
Staying for connection.
Staying because two me
is enough to make one of me
worth nothing at all.
And staying because maybe Lily does love the new Jenna
as much as the old one, after all.
Because maybe, given time, people do change,
maybe laws change.
Maybe we all change.”
"The accident was over a year ago. I've been awake for two weeks. Over a year has vanished. I've gone from sixteen to seventeen. A second woman has been elected president. A twelfth planet has been named in the solar system. The last wild polar bear has died. Headline news that couldn't stir me. I slept through it all."
Summary
Add a SummaryThis book was an AMAZING read!!! It is about a girl, Jenna, surviving and dealing with her emotions after being in a year long coma after a terrible car accident. The book also talks about humanity and love-- how far can a parent try to save their child? Although this book is a bit intense and nightmarish, I actually LOVED it. I will defiantly read more books like this one in the future.
Who is Jenna Fox? Seventeen-year-old Jenna has been told that is her name. She has just awoken from a coma, they tell her, and she is still recovering from a terrible accident in which she was involved a year ago. But what happened before that? Jenna doesn't remember her life. Or does she? And are the memories really hers?
Jenna Fox was an ordinary girl with an ordinary life. But then she had an accident. She awakens a year later only to wonder who, or rather what, she is. Her so called nanny will hardly speak to her, and when her parents do, they seem a little too careful with their choice of words. As time passes, Jenna calls to question not who she is, but rather what. In a world brimming with new technology and a page turning plot, dark secrets are revealed.

Comment
Add a CommentJenna Fox doesn't remember her life before the accident. Her father tells her that things will go back to normal in time, but Jenna is not sure she will ever feel like herself again, whoever that was. As time passes, she learns that her parents have not been truthful about her past. Both gripping and thought provoking, this story questions one's ideas about identity , morality, and love.
Very good book! There are some problems with it, in terms of how realistic it is, but it definitely has an interesting storyline. I am not big on sci-fi readings, but I really enjoyed this book.
the thoughts are true. its frustrating for her to be that way when her brain tells her shes supposed to be perfect and perfect is something even she cannot reach. jenna is torn and shes forced to be something even when its really not her. this Is a brilliantly frustrating book.
This book was by far the best book I have ever read!!! I always get too bored by the first page...well... after the first page...I was already so interested by this book , I am so excited for the next books that I am going to get by Mary E Pearson! Kudos to you Mary!!!
A good read, with interesting ideas about the future of biotech and what it means to be human and humane.
How far parents will go to keep their miracle child, going against the law and into hiding allow Jenna to lead a somewhat normal life until she discovers what her parents did and what she is. A story of love and the consequences of reckless actions.
The story is interesting but complex, and if there are themes or points trying to be made, they get lost. Character development is weak and the plot seemed to drag out. I also hated the ending.
This novel is a great little piece of science fiction. Set in a world that is only slightly in our future, Jenna's efforts to figure out who she is deftly explore the issues of identity, humanity, and grapples with the relationships that ultimately define us. Written in a slightly disjointed style, it takes a little getting used to but ultimately really works to reflect Jenna's fragmented reality. My only complaint is that the final chapter was too tidy, tying everything up neatly with a bow when ending on the previous chapter would have made for a more ambiguous but ultimately satisfying ending.
amazing book, except the relationship between other people were very akward to read at times
This book is grippingly intense and readers undergo a remarkable adventure to determine who Jenna Fox really is.
