" Keith's father was hostile, too. When i asked them if there was a history of depression in the family, the father acknowledged that he suffered from chronic low-level depression, for which he took medication, but insisted that his problem was his own and 'it's got nothing to do with Keith's stupid practical jokes.' Maybe not, but the fact is that depression does have genetic links and tends to run in families."

Though I'm skeptical of the premise of one universal boy experience, Raising Cain certainly made me aware of certain social and emotional pressures that my son will likely face, many of which I was never aware of because, well, I've never been a boy. I look forward to hearing my husband's perspective on the book, as well as discussing with him the healthy emotional habits we want to create together as parents and encourage in our son.
