Some of the stories in this collection will feel outdated, prejudiced, and unremarkable. All offer a useful insight into what is now the retro-futurism envisioned by writers of the early 1960's. As read today, the most powerful story in this collection is easily "Scanners Live in Vain", which as far as I know is almost completely unique in its subject matter. The psychology in Scanners feels incredibly accurate and the battles of culture fought within are still fought now in our own current world. The protagonist laments the unjust and horrific sacrifices he made to achieve his place in society, while also railing against those who would try to change the status quo and make the painful suffering he endured obsolete. Easily worth reading many times.
