This book was written when Rigoberta Menchu was 24. She was in Paris for a conference and spent a week telling her story to the author who then put it together in a comprehensible format with Rigoberta narrating the book.

I was fascinated by the cultural richness of Rigoberta's community, the way the community raised the children, the specific events in children's lives, the values, etc.

I knew something about how the Indians were treated but having this personal account gave me a much stronger impact into the details.

It is a very powerful book and a must read for anyone wanting to know more about recent Guatemalan history. I will be traveling there in February to visit Indian handicraft cooperatives. This was a good introduction to my visit.
