This was a satsifing conclusion to the Karla series of books. Finally George Smiley gets the lead that he needs to break the the damn that has kept Karla safe for so long. Even though you are never told his name you can figure it out. Hint: It starts with a G. Smiley does seem a bit down about how they made Karla break ranks, but it is a victory, just not very pleasing of a victory for George Smiley.

George is recalled from retirement. The Sandman has a legend and he's hiding something precious. Once again the knot is left in George's lap to untangle. Once again George steps into the shadows to answer the call, "Tell Max it concerns the Sandman."

This felt more of a sequel to "Tinker, Tailor..." than "The Honourable Schoolboy". The focus is back on Smiley as he quietly and slowly plays his final hand against Karla.

Tell Max that it concerns the Sandman. Gifted with the clarity that hunger, tiredness, and confusion can supply, Smiley knew for certain she must have no part in what he had to do. He knew-- he was barely at the threshold-- yet he still knew that it was just possible, against all the odds, that he had been given, in late age, a chance to return to the rained-out contests of his life and play them after all.
