A must-have book for the reader of horror fiction, both as an entertaining read and a valuable reference. King has a pretty good idea of what's scary, and he presents it in a clear and persuasive way. It's particularly good for helping you complete your reading of the best works in horror, not to mention the classic movies. My one cavil might be that he misses the British movie "Dead of Night," from 1945, an anthology film that brings all the stories together in a truly disquieting twist finale. Michael Redgrave puts in a fine performance as a ventriloquist whose dummy isn't in his corner.
