This is an enjoyable, educational book, an easy read that lets you devour the descriptions of Mark and Delia’s well written experiences of living in the Kalahari for 7 years before the little towns around the Kalahari became over populated with man. The love, devotion and hours that the Owen’s dedicated themselves to preserving the animals and the Kalihari opens up a vista of information not documented before Mark and Delia’s research was established.
I was in love with Ernest Hemingway and his stories of Africa, when I was a teenage girl. I read all of his books. I wanted to be like him and travel to far off places, so this book struck a soft chord within me. I really loved this book and I think anyone reading this book will agree with me.

I was intrigued to read this book after finishing "Where the Crawdad Sings". The Owens family works tirelessly in the Kalahari desert/preserve to study the animals, mostly the lions and brown hyenas. While in Africa they discover fencing, FMD and ill effects on wildebeest and antelopes. They become full fledged activists trying to preserve the wild animals, decrease hunting and increase tourism as a way to bring in much needed money to Botswana. However, the majority of this book is the Owens starting out as novices, setting up camp and studying the animals, how they eat, mate and care for their offspring plus the range of area need to subsist. Complete transformation in writing by D Owens. She is a champion for nature in both books!
