SPL has a novelized version of this movie by Alan Le May. I couldn't believe it when John Wayne's charater said he had to kill his niece they had been searching for all those years because she had been with a "BUCK" ! I was releaved that…

Gory premise. In this period would be strange as a man in the West, not to have killed someone (1868). Probably lots of women too. Union versus Confederate and Indian versus white. Movie well made. Commentary.

My husband and I wondered how can this is considered the best western ever made? It is cheesy, John Wayne character is discriminatory, there is no chemistry between him and Jeffrey Hunter. We also thing the movie is too long and treat…

I doubt this movie will stand the test of time. The depiction of Native Americans is truly cringe-worthy. I watched the whole thing because it is on the Sight & Sound list of best 100 movies, so I was curious. But it's not clear to me why.

I enjoyed watching this movie very much. Confession: I like cheesy westerns. so I liked this one. I thought it was good, some of my family members agreed, but we all agreed that is was sort of cheesy. I knew that this is one of his famous…

Another western fantasy for people who only learn history from movies with John Wayne because they can't be bothered to read a history book.

The "Civil Rights Western." Also, the one decent John Ford & John Wayne Western, that lets fanboys overhype and overpraise them both. Has John Ford's typical weird mix of life-or-death tension, with long diversions into broad,…

Remember the movie in the 50"s when it came out, loved it then and loved it now. I think I understood it better now than when I saw it in Junior high. Cowboys were the moves we enjoyed the most. In grade school we dressed like cowboys…

The mark of a great work of art is its unflinching depiction of the truth, even if it is politically incorrect or "problematic", as the wokesters would intone with pursed lips. The underlying truth depicted in this quest to avenge an…

Has to be watched while keeping in mind the era in which it was filmed. So, not bad.

MANY CONSIDER John Ford’s "The Searchers" to be John Wayne’s best movie. It is certainly one of his best performances. He laughs and cries and has genuine changes of heart. The story is more problematic. Wayne portrays a Confederate war…

Against a backdrop of soaring buttes and impossibly blue skies Ethan’s singleminded journey is as much psychological as physical; a few subtle hints suggest a man already burdened with a checkered past anxious to redeem himself and make…

This is a very good film: unusual and always surprising and a little off balance. Well acted, with interesting and atypical characters, and with great imagery. The bonus materials are great too: the commentary track is perceptive and…

IF NOT THE BEST Western ever made, it's one of the top five, right up there with "Shane," "High Noon," "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." What's more, Wayne's performance is not only his best, but also…

For my money, the best photographed Western of director John Ford's career, and Winton C. Hoch should have been nominated for an Oscar, and he makes Monument Valley look like a mural in widescreen (this accounts that he always shot in…

In a nutshell, this movie is about the kidnapping of a young girl by a band of Native Americans, the family members who spend years searching for her, and all the people those searchers encounter during that time. This isn't a nutshell…

Hello, darlings! - The superb location shooting in Monument Valley is one good reason to watch this vintage Western from 1956.

Quite a disappointment, given the incredible John Ford director and actor John Wayne who was ok, just fine, in the acting but the lines and situations in this film are skippable I'd say. SEE EL DORADO AND RIO GRANDE INSTEAD, PRONTO!! Too…

Maybe I should have given it 3 stars, but as a John Wayne fan (plus John Ford, and all the other big actors in this film), this is one of my least favorites. It's not John Wayne's character, whom I actually like. It's mostly the dialog,…

Disjointed is the word that best describes this movie. Disappointed is how i feel and that is saying something considering the director.

If John Ford is the greatest Western director, The Searchers is arguably his greatest film, at once a grand outdoor spectacle like such Ford classics as She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Rio Grande (1950) and a film about one man's…

Some fine vignettes of frontier life in the early southwest and a realistic presentation of the difficulties faced by the settlers in carving out a homestead in dangerous Indian country.

"The Searchers" was just named one of the 100 All-Time Greatest movies in the July 5/12, 2013 Entertainment Weekly magazine. And well deserved that honor is! I'd seen this movie many times but watched it again and enjoyed it just as much…

This is a really good western by John Ford, lots of drama, beautiful scenery, and a good story line. John Wayne's character is likeable at times, but other times not.
