A Workshop for the Senses: Using Art to Create Poetry

11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Wheelock Branch

Description

It’s easy to say “wow” when we encounter a powerful piece of art, but how do we move beyond first impressions and into language that truly captures what we experience?

In this interactive Creative Colloquy workshop, artist & poet Sandy King and poet Cat Melaunie invite participants to explore visual art through the lens of the senses. Through guided prompts and generative exercises, you’ll look more closely, listen more deeply, and translate your impressions into vivid words and unexpected connections.

Drawing on the tradition of ekphrastic writing (poetry inspired by visual art), we’ll experiment with ways to describe, interpret, and respond to imagery. Participants will have the opportunity to work from provided source material or bring an artwork of their own. The experience will culminate in creating an original poem shaped by sensory language and imagination.

No prior experience with art or poetry is necessary, just curiosity and a willingness to see in new ways.
