Description

**TPL'S ONLINE GENRE FICTION BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP!**

Speculative Fiction? What's that? Do you like science fiction? That's speculative fiction. Fantasy? OK, that's speculative fiction too. Horror, magical realism, alternate history, slipstream, steampunk, cyberpunk, dystopias, apocalyptic tales, and stories that are just plain weird? Yep. Those are all on the speculative fiction menu!

If reading and thinking outside the lines of humdrum, mundane life sounds interesting, join us to expand and explore your reading horizons with Tacoma Public Library's Other Worlds online book discussion group.

Each month, we'll gather online via Zoom on the last Wednesday of the month to discuss intriguing, mind-expanding, speculative books from across all the genres.

This Month:
The Left Hand of Darkness: Join us to discuss this classic of "social science fiction" by innovative, ground-breaking, and celebrated novelist Ursula K. Le Guin: A lone human ambassador is sent to the icebound planet of Winter, a world without sexual prejudice, where the inhabitants’ gender is fluid. His goal is to facilitate Winter’s inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the strange, intriguing culture he encounters.... Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement in the annals of intellectual science fiction.

NOTE: A limited number of copies of The Left Hand of Darkness will be available to be signed out by active TPL card holders. If you'd like to sign-out one of these, visit the Main Branch or have the staff at your local Branch request the book from the Other Worlds group facilitator, Scott Hermann. Digital eBook or eAudio copies may be available through TPL's Libby / OverDrive / Hoopla services while supplies last.
