Join artist Fumiko Kimura to learn the art of Haiga, which unites a haiku poem with a sumi painting. Sumi, the East Asian painting and writing developed together in ancient China, uses brush and ink on paper.
The class will learn to create a haiku poem based on displayed objects, and write it on the left side of a notebook. Then, they will learn to use brush and ink on rice paper and draw a picture on the right side of the notebook about the haiku, to complete the haiga painting.
One art work piece from each student will be mounted for an art exhibit of students' work at the Swasey branch in August. Students will be able to take their mounted art work home after the exhibit ends.
Funding provided by the Tacoma Artists Initiative Program.
Supplies will be provided.
For students in sixth grade through 12th grade.
