Sherman Alexie and Yuyi Morales - what a wonderful and obvious pairing of great storytelling and vibrant artwork! This story is steeped in culture and personal identify. Great for any age but find a K-3 kiddo or class to read to for ultimate fun.

The illustrated pages are stunningly beautiful. I flipped through them over and over. The story is very sweet although the text was sometimes a bit awkward. Don't let that stop you from trying out this lovely tale an Inuit mother shares with her child, about the natural world around them. The illustrated pages are stunningly beautiful. Youngsters will really enjoy the amusing illustrations of piranhas throughout this picture book. The story of Samson trying to break out of his usual routine to try something new is light and fun.

I read and really enjoyed David Grann's, Lost City of Z, written for an older audience. So I was happy to come across this picture book account written for a younger group. My 8 y.o. and I read this over the course of three nights. We took time out to look up some "lost cities" of the Amazon and search some of the species Fawcett encountered on his explorations there. The book focuses generally on Fawcett's explorations and less so on his own almost fanatic personality. Great read for anyone!I read and really enjoyed David Grann's, Lost City of Z, written for an older audience. So I was happy to come across this picture book account written for a younger group. An entertaining animated film for most ages. This isn't as polished as some other animated hits from the big studios, but it is still quite fun and decent to watch. Some questionable content and potty humor, surprised it got a G rating.

A perfect book, not too literary and not too light. Like other reviewers have said, NYC feels like another character to the story. I liked that it wasn't overwhelmingly so but it gave me an appreciation for the flavor and idiosyncrasies of the city. Chapters comfortably float from one character situation to the next with slim threads connecting some and very obvious ones for the others. Loved this book! Who said manners are old fashioned? This is a great book that gets the message across in a variety of scenarios, that saying please is easy and important in everyday life and special occasions. A very fun and diverting read about an American woman who unwittingly signs up for a reality show in England to win a hundred thousand dollars. Funny and informative for all things Regency. There are serious undertones too about life in 1812, so this wasn't a completely fluff read. I happened to read Jo Baker's novel Longbourn recently which is a more serious take on the time period, but it paired perfectly with this novel. Both are highly recommended!A very fun and diverting read about an American woman who unwittingly signs up for a reality show in England to win a hundred thousand dollars. A great fable portrayed in this picture book. We loved the message and the unique artwork. Not all our picture book reading leads to discussion but this one did. Themes of gratitude and not wasting what we have came up for us.

Loved this book. This might be the "edgiest" thing I've read with the 8 year old so far in terms of serious themes handled more matter of factly, and not sugar-coated.
The gist of the story is that a cargo ship has been lost at sea. A number of boxes or crates containing robots have washed up on an island. Only one survives intact and is accidentally activated by a curious bunch of island animals. Roz as she comes to be known, adapts slowly to life on the island via a series of adventurous, humorous and sometimes sad situations.
The author sets out the story in short chapters and very straight forward language that manages to bring the island and each of the animal voices to life. We read this aloud together which was great because we stopped occasionally to talk something over that had occurred. Themes? Community, alternative families, native life, environment, death, mothers and sons...I can't say enough good things about this short novel. For anyone with kids in their lives, or not.Loved this book. Just finished this and loved it. I didn't want it to end but I really wanted to find out what or who was responsible for the airplane crash that only two people (a 50 year old artist and a 4 year old boy) walked (or swam) away from. Character driven story, not literary, but definitely not fluff - thoughtful, intelligent, engrossing. Loved this!Just finished this and loved it. A great nonfiction alternative to the typical picture book for 4-8 year olds. We're enjoying some presidential history at home interspersed with other night time reading. This turned out to be a perfect read in that it was informative and entertaining, especially the illustrations and quick factoids (we didn't know that Lincoln's dog Fido was the first photographed presidential pet). We chose to read this over two nights, pre and post election life. Thumbs up!A great nonfiction alternative to the typical picture book for 4-8 year olds.
